1 out of 5 stars Does not work with HDV format   July 28, 2010
J. Halpern
I bought this product so that I could download video from my Canon HV10 digital video camera. This camera can record in HDV format and CyberLink PowerDirector 8 claims to support this format. However, after exchanging multiple (unhelpful) emails with their technical support team and returning the product once (the original Ultra product supposedly did not come with a key that activated the Ultra features) I was still unable to download the video in HDV format. I was able to download the video in a non-HD format, but so can Windows Movie Maker.

In the end, this product did not do what it said it could so I gave up a returned the product. Fortunately Amazon.com is great about their return policy so I plan on using it again to find a more compatible video editing application.

4 out of 5 stars Easy movie editing software   July 25, 2010

I have used Cyberlink before and have liked it very much. I like this version too. Its easy to use and simple to produce discs and streams to upload. my only complaint is that I have to save ALOT while I'm creating because the program will shut down with no warning on a fairly regular basis. As long as I save, it's not a big deal because I can bring it right back up, but it can be frustrating when you just want to work on something and it shuts down. the software is very user friendly and very intuitive. I like it alot for its funtionality, I hope cyberlink can work out the kinks because its an easy to use program.

4 out of 5 stars Free Trial may cause problems with installation of new software   June 27, 2010

I was unable to get Windows Movie Maker to edit my two HD formats so I searched for software that would at a reasonable price. After reading reviews I downloaded a couple of FREE TRIALS and Power Director was one of them.
Without a doubt Power Director was the easiest to use for me so I purchased it.
When I tried to install the new software via CD it would not load...apparently it doesn't uninstall the TRIAL VERSION automatically like many other programs do and for some reason the TRIAL SOFTWARE didn't appear in my uninstall programs menu in the Control Panal. (I am running Windows Vista Ultimate).
I e-mailed Customer Service and got a fix and even got through to a polite voice who reiterated what I must do.
To me, the fix was too complicated! I had to download a special program from Microsoft to uninstall the TRAIL SOFTWARE, go into Program Files to get rid of stuff there and then "delete items from the Registry!" (I hate stuff like that)!
I eventually got the New Program running but some of the steps were not exactly as explained in the "fix."
I feel the average person wouldn't want to go through all this just to install this software and Power Director needs to address this problem where the TRIAL is automatically removed.
On a positive note, Power Director seems to fill my needs and is fairly intuitive for most people. It seems to have a few glitches and has crashed a couple of times, but if you back up your work often it shouldn't be a problem.
I haven't figured out the HELP section yet (if there is one) and when you go to the online FORUMS the search function didn't seem to work and I could not find HELP TOPICS to assist me with my "HOW TO" questions.
After editing, the finished product is superb and you are presented with lots of save options including direct uploading to You Tube which works well. This product is well worth the money in my opinion and I recommend it, however, as with any new program...there are learning curves especially for we seniors!

5 out of 5 stars Cyberlink Power   June 11, 2010

I am very happy with this program. I have been able to create video and burn it to a disk. This was a very difficult process using Roxio. You tube has many Cyberlink tutorials available that explain in detail how to do something.

What I can do so far is. Capture Video, edit such as simple tasks like adding text and cutting scenes, and create a dvd. There are many pre-made templates to make life easy for adding text or effects.

One problem I seem to be having could be with my Sony Optiarc DVD burner. Most created disks play in my DVD player but some fail and cannot be read. Why? I am in the market for a new DVD burner with reliable Dual Layer and AVCD capabilities.

I am still a rookie with this software. Lockups and failures are few, video editing software glitches seem to heal themselves given time. Saving and restarting can help. Once a video file became corrupt and I just cut that segment away and all was well.

For me and many people I talked to, Roxio is too unreliable and prone to lockups, failures and lost data. Cyberlink works great. The final solution is a higher end computer with Final Cut installed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent video editor, but horrible DVD creator.   May 15, 2010
John Sleen (Philadelphia, PA)
I've been using PD8 Ultra with my new Core i7 computer with 6GB of memory and a Blu-ray/DVD burner. The PD software is a decent low-budget video editor that does everything I need to edit HD video from my Cannon HF 10 camcorder (AVCHD). The problem comes when I need to burn a disc. The software is absolutely horrible at creating either a DVD disc or a Blu-ray disc. I've had so much trouble that I finally just started creating the DVD output to file and use a separate burner software (imgburn) to create the discs. But now, the PD software won't even write the DVD output to file. I keep getting source errors and customer support at Cyberlink is non-existent. If you are on a low-budget, then PD8 will probably work, but if can spend more money - then do it can get something more professional like Adobe.
