Boot Recovery July 29, 2010 PC Tech (RI, United States) So far I've only used it for disk and partition backups and restores to a secondary hard drive. Have not tried data backup by files, or backup to DVD media.
A lot has been said by other reviews already, so I'll only mention a couple of things. One is, I have a new Dell desktop with Windows 7. This machine comes with a diagnostics and OEM image partition on the hard drive. I lost the ability to boot that partition after I enabled the option in Acronis for boot up recovery (so you could start Acronis before Windows load). It appears Acronis made a change to the boot sector and I was not able to recover it. Some people don't care about loosing use of the factory image, but some want it. Also if you have some other tool that depends on how your machine boots, be careful about letting Acronis change the disk's boot information.
Another issue I ran into, maybe due to user error but I couldn't figure it out, is Acronis kept restoring a drive image (created by backing up entire drive) to new and larger drive "by sector" and so was duplicating the smaller drive's partition sizes even though I specifically set it to restore the entire drive and sized the partitions. I tried this three times, just to make sure I covered all the bases that I can find, but no luck. The only was I found to restore to bigger partitions on the new drive was to do a direct disk to disk clone, with both (laptop IDE) drives connected via USB enclosures.
One other quirk just came to me, the scheduled partition backups auto-name the backup file identifying the backed-up partition as H: when in fact it is the C: drive. This only occurs on automated backups, not on manually launched backups which do correctly identify the partition as the C: drive.
Overally I'm happy with this tool, given the limited use I put it to. To be honest I prefer the old versions of Ghost (easier to use interface IMO), but they don't support Window 7 so this will have to do.
DVD support problematic July 26, 2010 Amateur Woodworker (Omaha, NE United States) Buy at your own RISK. Rereading the product reviews some folks are having a great time. I'm not. today I returned the product. At almost 6 weeks of e-mail exchanges to work around my problem, I've threw in the towel. On my machine (W-7,64-bit) Acronis will not perform a backup to DVD. It always hangs looking for a second DVD with error msg [6082: Can't Find DVD Burner [ ref:00D3Zcb.50058xaES:ref ]]. Acronis recommendation was to backup to hard drive in 4.7G segments and use W-7 to copy the segments to DVD-R. This process works. What does not work is recovering the DVD contents back to Hard Drive using the Bootable Media. This makes the product useless when you crash your C-drive. So if you have an AMD-64 Athlon MB with a SATA Pioneer DVD-RW (DVR-212D) forget this product. For those folks who rely solely on backing up to 1T Hard Drives, consider how you will recover your records when the HD fails, gets burned in a fire or lost in a tornado. You should always keep a copy off site, especially if your a business. I'm placing my DVD's in a safety deposit box.
I cannot recommend it. July 24, 2010 Russell Martin (Northern California) Before my hard drive started to fail, I had totally backed up my C: drive with 2 copies 6 months apart to an exterior hard drive using Acronis True Image 2009. One month or so later, my C: drive was slowly fading with traces of errors. So I installed a new drive but Acronis True Image application was corrupt by that time and would not restore. So I tried to delete it, but I could not, so therefore I could not reinstall Acronis True Image application. Then I e-mailed ATI Support for help with a 48 hour reply, acceptable.
Contacting Acronis was easy but results were very difficult.
Here is my experience: [with Harkrishanpal Singh, Abhishek Ranjan, Mani Shekhar and Utpal Neog in India.]
The 1st three support agents that I had e-mail communicate with instructions that did not resolve the problem. The 2th one suggested using the phone and we did talk, but I could only understand about 10% or less of his Indian/English. So, that was not the answer. I asked him if I could talk to someone in the USA, he said that ATI Support is in either India or Russia only. Then he suggested the chat method, that did work because I could then understand his written English. He took over my computer by remote with my permission and fixed the problem. This should have been done earlier on.
I can no longer trust Acronis True Image. I cannot recommend it.

If there's a better backup product, I haven't found it July 21, 2010 S. Lionel (NH USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used Acronis True Image for years, and each new release truly improves the product. With True Image Home 2010, Acronis has pretty much polished off my wish-list and I depend on it to protect all of my systems.
Here's how I use it on my main desktop system. I have two backup jobs, one for each of the two disks, that run alternate days. They do incremental backups to a NAS (Network Attached Storage) box in my basement. After the initial backup, each incremental job runs for no more than 10 minutes. I get an email notification when each completes.
I have set the options so that when the backup is more than 90 days old, it automatically discards older backup information so I don't fill up my backup disk - I always have backups going 90 days back. The backups are compressed and password-protected. I have a third job that backs up the boot disk to an "Acronis Secure Zone" on the second disk - this is a hidden partition managed by True Image that is not visible in Windows, so it is much less likely to be corrupted by something going wrong on the system.
You can create bootable rescue media, on CD, DVD or a USB key, that can restore images from local or network disks. You can also install a recovery manager on your boot disk so that you can recover just by pressing a key at boot time.
Acronis True Image Home 2010 also includes file and folder backup, a disk cloning feature, and a secure file eraser. If you also have Acronis Disk Director 11 Home, this can integrate with True Image on the recovery media.
I have also used Symantec Norton Ghost 15.0, but I don't like it anywhere near as much as True Image.
- Ghost can't back up multiple disks in one job
- Ghost won't let you define multiple jobs for one disk
- Ghost is much slower to back up
- Ghost's bootable recovery disc is MUCH slower to load and start
- If your system is asleep or off at a scheduled backup time, Ghost will just skip the backup whereas Acronis True Image will start it the next time the system is on (this can be disabled.)
Until recently, Ghost did have one advantage for one of my systems, which dual-boots Windows and Mac OS X. By itself, Acronis True Image Home won't work with a disk that has non-Windows partitions on it, while Ghost will at least deal with the Windows partitions. But you can buy as an add-on, a "Plus Pack" that recently added support for disks with non-Windows partitions, virtual disks, and one more thing - the ability to do a "bare metal" restore of an image to a system with different hardware. This used to be a feature restricted to Acronis' business software line, but the Home line can now use it for much less. I don't see that Amazon sells the Plus Pack - you can buy it from the Acronis web site.
There are several other features of True Image Home 2010 that I have not used, such as "Try and Decide", which lets you easily roll back the disk state after doing a software install or similar modification, the "Nonstop Backup" which provides continuous protection, and the Boot manager, which lets you boot directly from an image backup!(This works only on certain editions of Windows 7)
Acronis support is pretty good, though unless you pay extra it is mainly forum-based. Luckily the forum works well and useful help is available.
I like Acronis True Image Home 2010 very much, and have found it to be extremely reliable. I trust my systems to it and consider it a bargain.
Acronis struck out with this one--but not a total loss July 16, 2010 Gerald D. Fensterer 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So, if you're using Win 7 of either 32 or 64 bit versions, you should really be using the MS Backup/restore. First, it's free. Second, it's an MS product and "should" (for me, it works better than anything else I've tried) work because it's been specifically designed to work on Win 7.
But if you want to use something else, I don't recommend Acronis True Image (ATI) 2010. In it's basic form, it occasionally works (I didn't say well) on my computer to back up my software and OS. However, I've turned off all of the extra goodies (like non-stop backup), because they really were screwing up the performance of my computer. Blue screens of death and system freezes were constant. There are several blogs online that have multiple complaints from ATI2010, so I'm apparently not the only one having problems. I believe I even read about it causing a computer to become unbootable, although I'm not quite sure how.
Customer service with ATI2010 was... how should I put this? Worse than it should be, but better than banging your head against a spiked wall... uhm, well we'll let the other people comment on that. After multiple separate tries when the ATI2010 degrading performance on my computer, I never got through to an agent. I don't know why--it was like I was in "on hold limbo." I gave up after a few days, and just uninstalled ATI2010, going back to MS Backup/restore.
I was able to backup my system with ATI2010 a couple times, but it was not worth the BSODs and freezes. For those of you who have gotten it to work, great! I can't recommend this product however.
